Scripture says “Those who have ears to hear let them hear.” Because of the action-oriented focus of the Hebrew language and culture, I believe this is telling those who have ears to hear let them obey! Where we walk also affects our ability to keep our balance. Hearing the Word of God and identifying with the many ways God speaks to us and obedience to what we hear, brings balance and gives us the ability to stand firm. The ear is used for hearing the Word of God. The ear is representative of our ability to hear and otherwise recognize what God is saying to us, whether it comes through sermons, Bible study etc. The ear, whose primary function is to hear is necessary if we are to stand firm. The ear is significant to our ability to be balanced. This has come out of a simple realization that I am sure isn’t new to anyone. If I didn’t want you to hear what someone who was always with you was saying, one of my only options would be to keep you distracted or drive you and the person apart, and therein I believe is one of satan’s most effective strategies, busy. How amazing it is that the only time many have for God or are quiet enough for Him to be heard, is the time where no one else would want to talk to us good thing our God would rather save us, than hold out for what He deserves! It’s incredible how many people tell me they hear God in the bathroom, and I’m no exception. How many of us then find ourselves constantly engaged up until we go to bed again, often from pure exhaustion? How many just as quickly jump on to Facebook, or WhatsApp? How many of us wake up listening to the radio or quickly end up watching tv, or talking to people around us, whether it be with our kids or otherwise.

How many of us ever have or set aside quiet time, to hear Him? The Holy Spirit is here to guide us, but how many of us listen, and how many hear the voice of God today in our busy, fast-paced lifestyle. Some would have grown hearing the older folks talking about “a mind tell me” or “always follow your mind”, as if this mind was somehow separate and distinct from them, makes me wonder whose “mind” we may have been instructed to follow? What is our conscience anyway, how can our mind fight against itself in certain things? What single unified entity fights against itself? My take on this is simple if it seemingly didn’t originate from me or I started to think about something that I rather not be thinking about, then it’s not coming from me.

If that is the case as we go along our merry way from day to day, let us pay attention to the “internal dialogue” we have and try to identify and pay attention to the origin of some of these thoughts. I have heard Derek Prince explain a spirit as a person without a body once, that stuck with me, and I have grown to recognize that there is a lot of benefit in this simplified explanation. Jesus said His sheep recognize His voice, do we know when the Holy Spirit is speaking to us can we identify His voice? With that, the next simple question is, do you hear from the Holy Spirit?

While that may sound crazy to some, Jesus is very much alive, and He who I believe still does only the will of the Father speaks to the heart of men today and daily through the Holy Spirit. For me, because I like basic logic, hearing the Word of God is also hearing from Jesus today. As believers in Christ, most of us recognize the importance of hearing the Word of God, but does it just mean knowing the Bible, or listening to a sermon, or even turning on a Bible app and listening to the Bible being read? Hearing the Word of God is all this, but surely it is more, especially when we consider Jesus Himself is the Word of God.
